Brink4

The big new announcement from Bethesda and Splash Damage, open world FPS game Brink, has finally revealed some details beyond the practically information free teaser trailer they debuted the other day.

From the teaser I was imagining some kind of epic space opera science fiction in the Mass Effect vein of universe. In reality Brink has a lot more in common with nineties overblown film Waterworld.

No really.

Seems those crazy global warming prophets were right and the future sees a world covered in water. Other than a few rusty atols floating around the sea there's one safe place people aspire to, The Ark, that white tower from the trailer.

Unfortunately the Ark sees a fair amount of violence with the security forces trying to keep various resistance fighters out of it. So there's lots of have's shooting at have nots and vice versa. From the sound of things you can play as either one side or the other, resistance or security forces, with two seperate campaigns and missions for each side. It might be primarily an FPS game but it has a persistent world and open ended approach to missions much more reminiscent of other Bethesda games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

One of the things that most peaked my interest was the inclusion of coop online play with you joining a team of up to seven friends to tackle missions and objectives. Very cool indeed. You can also play competitively with eight versus eight online. Brink sounds like it may have the cooperative mode to beat come next year. Also of interest was the mention that your player would be more than a gun tied to a pair of rollerskates. Your character with be able to vault over and climb up obstacles in a manner very similar to Mirrors Edge, only with a more intuitive Assassin's Creed, single button press system for climbing.

All up Brink is sounding pretty damn good and as you can see from the attached screen shots pretty damn nice as well. Hopefully we'll see some of the gameplay that was shown to press at E3 some time soon. The bad new is that Brink is scheduled for release on the 360, PS3 and PC until mid 2010.
