Being a long time and enthusiastic fan (apologist?) of the Hitman series of games I was pretty excited for a big screen version to capture the decadence and class of my favourite game screen killer Agent 47. Instead I got a popcorn flick with teeth gnashing departures from the game material (hidden samurai swords? kidnapped children instead of clones?) I couldn't even be mollified by Olga Kurylenko's delightful acting abilities (both of them).
Well, very surprisingly, 20th Century Fox have hired screen writer Kyle Ward to pen a sequel.
Lets just do the math here quickly. We have:
- 1 Leading man Timothy Olyphant who did a, lets say passable, job but also said the director was a knob and he hated every minute of filming who probably won't be reprising the role.
- 1 Director who hated making the movie and is equally unlikely to return to the film.
- 1 Sex bomb named Olga who has since gone on to be a bond girl and make some well regarded foreign language films and is probably not the least bit interested in reprising her shallow role as a poorly tatooed russian hooker.
Which equals a movie thats all ready at negative 3. So we're likely looking at a sequel with not a single one of the key original players returning, written by a guy who turns up almost nothing on IMDB.
Call me pessimistic but I'm not expecting great things from Hitman Part Deux. Hopefully a game will bridge the intervening period because if Hitman devolves into a series of Direct to Video abominations I will drink paint.
