A long time ago there were some games called Mechwarrior that were based on an old table top game called Battletech about factions in the future battling it out for control of resources. The series had a great little tag line I remember well, ‘In the future life is cheap, but Battlemechs aren’t’. He he, awesome.
Anyway, these games were very good and enjoyed by many. Then they stopped making them. Now they’re making them again.
Rather than a sequel the new game will simply be called Mechwarrior and will feature you piloting several different kinds of Mechs and doing battle with other mechs as well as infantry and artillery units.
Piranha Games who worked on the recent Transformers game (but don’t hold that against them) has the developer hat on for this new instalment and promises with next gen technology a game that really feels like you’re piloting a Mech.
This sounds promising to me, the problem with previous giant robot games is that it always feels like you’re just the mech and when the mech dies you die. A game that really felt like you were controlling a guy controlling a mech would be an accomplishment. I’d like to see the ability to get in and out of the mech at the very least so that its at least identifiable as a vehicle and not your actual character. Mechwarrior 2 on the Xbox actually had this and even allowed you to use a tether gun to hijack enemy Mech’s which was, as you’d imagine, completely awesome.
Observe the teaser video below, which predictably tells us nothing. But it’s good to know there’s more mech in our immediate gaming future.
