First there was a Marvel MMO, then for a time there was not and there was much mailing and gnashing of teeth. People went back to just talking about whether or not the Hulk could beat Wolverine (he totally could, he’s the Hulk, nothing can stop him, it just makes him angrier).

Now there is a Marvel MMO again, rejoice! They seem pretty serious about it this time considering the talent they’ve brought on board.

They being Gazillion entertainment and the talent being David Brevik to run the development studio. Brevik was the head of Blizzard North for about seven years and has had his hands deep in both Diablo and Diablo II. That’s some pretty impressive cred right there.

Incidentally this is how it should work Gazillion, take notes. No create your own hero thing, no making your own spandexed super guy or girl to level up and have adventures and meet all the Marvel characters and won’t that be great blah blah blah… NO. It won’t be great.

The setting is New York, an expanded version of New York complete the upstate so we can have Xaviers school for gifted youngsters. You drop into a server and select which of the Marvel characters you wish to play as then you play as that character and have adventures and fight bad guys with other characters or on your own, whatever. If you’re one of the Avengers you could maybe go and hook up with other people playing as Avengers, maybe four friends could get together and be the Fantastic Four. If you want to be Spiderman, like REALLY want to be Spiderman, and someone all ready is, then find a realm where Spiderman isn’t currently being used and drop in.

I see the game as inFamous with other people. Which is awesome to just sit back and think about. A persistent city world you can drop in and out of as you like, with perhaps a moment to change from your secret identity if you have one as the loading screen. The Marvel MMO is slated for the PC and consoles at some far off date, most likely end of 2010 early 2011.
