We’ve been teased, cajoled and hinted to about Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory’s next title to gobsmack us with visual grandeur (although this time they will hopefully make the game a bit longer). We even had the title, Enslaved, to speculate on for weeks before we got any official information.
Well now we have some information and, surprisingly, Enslaved seems to be a science fiction retelling of Journey to the West.
Journey to the West is considered one of the four great classical novels of China, which also include Romance of the Three Kingdoms which inspired my beloved Dynasty Warriors and The Watermark which inspired ever wuxia kung fu film you've every seen. Journey to the West has been adapted into dozens of different media over the years. In fact you’ve probably seen it on TV if you’re a child of the eighties. Monkey magic ring any bells? Yes, Journey to the West is the official title of the hit TV show Monkey. During the eighties kids all over the UK and Australia sat down on a weekly basis to enjoy the poorly dubbed adventures of fallen gods Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy as they escorted the priest (who totally looked like a chick) Tripitaka to India on a Buddhist quest. After which, if they were anything like me, the kids ran into the backyard and screamed incomprehensible chinese while spinning a broom handle over their head until they knocked themselves out with it. I have a scar.

Enslaved features a science fiction setting where the character of Monkey is an escaped slave in a post apocalyptic America. Monkey certainly bares a resemblance to his namesake, complete with quarter staff and gold head band, no flying cloud though, damn. There’s a twist though, Monkey’s head band is controlled by his reluctant partner Link, a ‘tech savvy’ young woman who is using Monkey’s abilities to achieve some secret goal, if he doesn’t obey he gets a flash of pain and if Trip should die, he’ll die as well. Link will be AI controlled, probably similar to your female partner in Prince of Persia.
The game is co written and most of the mocap performed by man of many faces Andy Serkis. Who also provided almost all of the performances for Heavenly Sword and was, in my opinion, the best part of a very good game.
Checkout the screenshots below, then huff that this games 2010 release can’t come soon enough.

Monkey seems to be pretty capable at trashing rusty robots with his bare hands

Monkey and Link seem like an inseperable pair, not by choice though

Just cause its post apocalyptic doesn't mean it has to be all burnt out ashes

Hopefully Enslaved doesn't fall into the trap of being one long escort mission
