For anyone that knows Guy "Yug" Blomberg (and I don't presume to know him very well), to hear that he's opening a venue that mixes videogames and alcohol would be no surprise. He is the rockstar party boy of the Australian videogame journalism scene and since co-creating Australian Gamer back in 2005 has dug out a considerable ce-web-rity niche for himself that is helping to fuel Australia's relatively fledgling videogame community.
Now he's opening a bar. A bar that will move your usual Friday nights of sitting in your jocks wrapping Cheetoh-stained fingers around your Xbox 360 controller to a more public setting.
Lucky us.

Opening next month in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, Yug says, "the Mana Bar will feature a stylish geek chic interior design with multiple LCD screens attached to the walls with playable next-gen console systems. The venue will be accessible to a wider casual market, while still catering to the hardcore gamer crowd.
"The venue will be accessible to a wider casual market, while still catering to the hardcore gamer crowd."
"Entry to the venue will be free, with no charge to play the games. The Mana Bar has a 50 person maximum capacity, and will host many special events such as game release parties, Guitar Hero tournaments, trivia nights, launch events, and many more."
Yug's certainly not alone in this venture. He's joined by Pras Moothry, Senior Designer at Sega Creative Assembly, hospitality guru Shay Leighton and the internet's Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.

There's no doubt that opening a bar in the heart of Brisbane’s entertainment district is good, if not risky, business, but I'm more interested in this as a social experiment. The stereotypes tell me that you're either out clubbing on a Saturday night, or you're at home deciding whether to Prestige or not. I guess Yug, Pras, Shay and Yahtzee have front row seats to the proving of whether or not the two can ever cross over.
Good luck boys, I'll see you there. Jocks or no jocks, you better let me in. |
