Before I say anything about this game, look at the screenshot above and read this quote from 505 Games.
"Players tired of the same old shoot-'em-up, recycled game play are going to get what's coming to them in Naughty Bear. The all-new scare-based points system introduces a whole new element of fun in Naughty Bear as players win the most rewards for being deviant and maniacal." That is directly from 505 Games President Adam Kline's mouth.
Ah... What?
Naughty Bear, a game developed by A2M for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and distributed by 505 games, takes the time honoured tradition of cute fluffy Teddy Bears being treasured and throws it out the window in favour of destroying them.
The games singleplayer will have you take revenge on the other bears that didn't invite you to their party (those mean buggers.) You earn points, our old mate Atkinson will love this game, as you scare, maim, hurt and abuse other bears during the thirty stage single player game.
Think GTA in a fairytale world of teddy bears that drive cars, how cool is that? You can set traps for other bears using candy and other things (honey?) and wait for a bear to take the bait to scare the stuffing out of them. For a more hands on approach you can take a bat and beat the hell out of the other bears. To add more to the GTA similarities there are police bears that will come looking for you, so watch out while terrorising the bear island.
The points system unlocks new weapons, outfits and new areas of the island for Naughty Bear to terrorize. Setting traps will earn you more points over just mindlessly beating other bears up, but beating other bears up can be done a lot quicker. Oh did I see a shotgun and a machete in the trailer? I think I did.
The bears don't talk yet, so most of the story is told by a British narrator. This seems to keep it as fairytale like as possible so that the game doesn't come off as sadistic instead of just plain violent.
So to recap; this is a game about a sadistic, torturous and cute bear taking revenge in a fairytale world. Sweet! So if you are sick of your children loving their cutesy Teddy Bears get them to watch this trailer.
Have a look at the trailer and see if you get excited for the game when it releases in 2010. Though I must warn you, it's not a PSN/XBLA title.
