L.A. Noire takes place in a completely reconstructed simulation of 1940's Los Angele's and follows two cops on the trail of a murder suspect. There's all the usual detective novel elements of drugs, sex, corruption and all the other finer things in life. If the game is ringing a few bells inside your head, possibly harking back to a game called The Getaway, a GTA clone and contemporary crime caper set in a recreated London, that's not a coincidence. Brendan Mcnamara, the Development Director for The Getaway is the founder and lead developer for Team Bondi.
But L.A. Noire has something The Getaway didn't and that's Rockstar as a Publisher which guarantee's the title will move a few extra units. For a short teaser for the game check out the official L.A. Noire site here.

L.A. Noire faces a difficult task, far difficult than other games, making hats and plaid cool again

Not much word on how much of the gameplay is actual detective work as opposed to driving around and shooting stuff, I'm hoping for a lot

Having the whole city of L.A. circa 1940 as a playground is an attractive idea, we'll see how it plays out as a game
