There's been an interesting little turn of developments regarding the Japanese game "RapeLay" with CNN wading in with - in my opinion - justifiably raising concerns regarding the Japanese liberal stance on 'themes and ideas' in video gaming. There are censorship laws where genitalia must be obscured, even if animated, but the 'themes and ideas' allowance means NOTHING is taboo. This is an issue for the rest of the world due to the ability to 'digitize' restricted and banned material and share it, which is what's happening with 'RapeLay'.
IF you're not aware, 'RapeLay' was released in April, 2006, in Japan. Click through for a basic rundown according to gaming.wikia.com and rest of article.
Must warn, some of the content after click through is of a sexually graphic and violent nature and SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED SUITABLE FOR MINORS. Some content even I find offensive.
Just some high low lights regarding the content of the 'game'.
"The player plays as achikan (a perverted man who frequently fondles women) in crowded subway trains. A young woman named Aoi has the player arrested for molesting her. Afterwards, the player plans to exact revenge by molesting and raping her entire family. His first victim is Manaka, Aoi's younger sister; he rapes her in a public bathroom. His next target is Yuko, the mother of Aoi and Manaka, whom he rapes in the park. Aoi is the main character's third target, the woman who had turned him in to the police. He rapes her in a hotel after she is tied up. Afterwards, he brings out Manaka and Yuko."
Character Description:
"Manaka: A younger girl with short black hair who wears a blue dress. She moans a lot more than the other charcters and tends to look at the player with fearful cute eyes during sex. The player can make her wear cat ears so that she will produce cat noises."
Gameplay:
"The object of the game is to "break" the three girls; that is to say, to force the girls to enjoy your molesting them rather than resist it [...] The game is open ended with two exceptions: if the player impregnates one of the girls or the player gets killed by Aoi before she has been broken. If the player impregnates one of the girls and decides to keep the child, the main character gets thrown into an oncoming train after a certain number of days thereafter.
When the player lifts up a girl's clothes and gropes her genitals and breasts. The girl also uses her hands and attemps to prevent the player from groping her. An option to use a dildo is available."
There's is also 'unlockable' multiplayer modes. From Two Player, up to Five Player.
Shippo:
"Also known as 3P or 4P mode. In this mode, the main character is able to have sex with two or three girls. In this scenario, the main character is in high danger of getting killed. This mode can be unlocked by achieving the skills (e.g. Fill, Anal, Expose, Swallow, Shame, Talk) under each girl's picture."
Anyway, that's enough for me. Although the controversy surrounding this 'game' has been around for four years, CNN waded into the fray due to online shared versions having gone 'viral'. Read full article HERE.
Nogami Takeshi, a Japanese Manga author, retorted CNN's coverage HERE in part with:
"...in the proud Japanese traditional popular art of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints from the Edo period), there were many works with sexual subjects, called shunga. You did like these too, didn't you?Well, we are their successors. We make works of art. Let me say that again. It is just art. I assume that you are capable of distinguishing fiction from reality like we do. Are you not?"
Content like the above are a nightmare for the police of the borderless internet, and unfortunately - as used by Michael Atkinson regarding the R18+ debate here in Australia - they will be used as cause célèbres for the uninformed and/or uneducated. It's an interesting - not including the above content - subject on how the government can police the internet. Truth be told, they can't, it's impossible, all they can do is makes laws which will put you in court on sex offender charges if you download content like this. Read HERE of an example. The moral debate is redundant regarding content like described above when it's criminal to have in your possession. Also, we in the gaming community NEED to set limits about what we deem suitable in gaming. Some things just shouldn't be called entertainment.
