Firefall Looks Like a Game Changing MMO

So you don't like MMO's, I know I know. Waste of time, money/time drain, boring number crunching, yap yap yap. You tried WoW, you didn't like it so you've written off MMO's because lets face it, every other MMO is two steps removed from the WoW formula.

But what about a different kind of MMO, what about one with fast paced shooting action, alien worlds, jet packs, space ships, alien bugs. What about an MMO that didn't look like any MMO you have ever seen before. Something that, no matter how many socks you tug on, it blows them all off and clips your toe nails into the bargain.

Behold non believer: FireFall.

Yes I know, I know. 'Cinematic trailer'. I can hear you relaxing into your seats, comfortable in the knowledge that once again I've been hustled on the hype train to disappointment town. Because, lets be honest, that happens to me a lot, I'm a sucker for good marketing. Orchestral sound tracks are enough to make me squeal 'epic in the making'.

Well, by way of evidence for my puppy dog over excitement for Firefall, below is a 10 freaking minute long game trailer that looks even better! Gird your loins gentlemen and fair ladies and watch!

Wow, whoa, gee willikers. Did you see all the stuff and/or things in that game play trailer? First person and third person view switching, plus the old iron sites view mode to keep Pete happy (did you see that Pete!), space ships dropping giant thumper mining devices from the sky that attract bugs as they gather resources, villages getting attacked by... something, robot aliens or something, cool whatever they were, upgradeable armour suits with gyrating heat sinks!

It's like Borderlands and World of Warcraft had a baby (yes all my game development theories are based on older games having sex, thank you for noticing) then that baby grew up watching cheesy 80's sci fi movies and old anime cartoons and, upon reaching maximum maturation, was connected by glowing, pulsating wires to the internets so that we could use our computers to run around in its imagination. Yes that's pretty much exactly what Firefall looks like. Wow, wow and wow. I challenge anyone (who plays games) to watch that above trailer and not be entirely psyched for this game.

Currently Firefall is listed as a PC only title (no mention of Mac! Eeek!) but how well would a game like this go down on a current generation console? The game looks made for consoles.

I suspect, with my mind, that some of the developers may have worked on the Halo MMO previously as the way the armour levels up rather than the characters themselves looks very similar to some of the concept artwork that leaked for that title after Ensemble folded. The main guys involved are Mark Kern, former lead developer of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and Scott Youngblood, former lead designer on Tribes. Yes, Tribes. Overall the game has quite the pedigree of talent.

Anyhoo, in case you're at work or some where with crappy bandwidth I've posted a great big delicious buffet of images below. You just need to scroll down and shake your head from side to side really quick so it looks like they're moving.

There will be a closed Beta for the game and to sign up you just need to go to the games official site http://www.firefallthegame.com and join the forum. No release date for Beta or full game yet though.

Oh, and it's worth noting that the initial game will be free.
