Welcome to Game Gadgets, a regular column highlighting technology from the world of gaming and a gadget obsession that goes hand in glove with our gaming obsession.
This week I have a little treat for those PC gamers out there that want to start playing on a console but can’t wrap their heads, and hands, around standard Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 controllers.

The biggest complaint heard from PC gamers is that they miss their mouse and keyboard. Well complain no more, provided that you have a Playstation 3 and aren’t left handed. SplitFish Gameware, a Swedish company has come up with a product they call the “FragFX.” It is basically a Playstation 3* controller that maps the right analogue stick (though this is swappable) to a mouse and places the rest of the buttons on a grip controller dubbed the “GripChuck”. It has been designed with FPS in mind but I think it would work just as well with some RTS games that have seemed to be missing a Mouse.
From Splitfish.com: “The FragFX v.2 features a separate right hand mouse controller and detachable left hand grip controller, ideal for experiencing the traditional PC mouse and keyboard style game play of shooter games in a console environment.”
It works with all Playstation 3 games and anything else that the controller is used for (internet browsing, although you could just use a USB mouse). It has a good level of customisation, with the d-pad and the “Frag” button (more on that later) the only exceptions on an otherwise fully software mappable controller.
Motion sensitivity is included, this can be mapped to a specific button, some have used it to throw grenades, melee or reload with a quick flick of the wrist. When you depress the Frag button it slows the movement to make it easier for sniping or a controlled grenade throw.
By all reports it seems to work well, IGN gave it a 9.1 in their review, and the firmware is upgradeable so any early gremlins are likely to be fixed.
There is only one model now available which is wireless, and retails for $US79.95 (roughly $AU115 at time of publishing). To those that want a so called “Gateway Drug” into console gaming, it would be worth the money if they can find one.
