I don’t consider myself a prude. On the shelf behind me is the greatest piece cinematography ever pressed into existence; namely, Rambo (2008).
Even the title gets down to the brass tacks.
I’m confident in assuming that we all agree in 'KRudd’s' nanny state overseers who make the rules regarding gaming content – (I’m looking at you Michael *growing drugs is alright in S.A. but 18+ game content classification isn’t for the whole country?* Atkinson) – have some sort of deficiency in the consistency function in the head and appear seriously out of touch with reality based on his own comments. It seems hypocritical due to the fact that I can put on my over-sized sunnies and a large hat and head to my local ‘stick shop’ and pick up a DVD of some sort of debauchery involving ‘fists’ and ‘waste management’. How then, does it make sense that I can’t go to a game shop and get a game where I get to train and prepare for the coming Zombie Apocalypse?
Seriously, Rambo (2008) far surpasses anything I’ve seen in a game, and it’s on my shelf!?
Having said that, does anyone else find overt sexual content and excessive swearing kind of odd in a video game?
I mean, whatever floats your boat, so to speak, and you should have the right to view content like that in a game if you choose, but depending on the context it kind of gives me the same sort of vibe as those emails you used to get with Donald and Daisy Duck ... well ... you could guess, or ‘Hentai’, as well. I have no idea what that does for people and play safe if it does something for you, but somehow it just doesn’t sit right with me.
Maybe those ‘Donald Duck’ emails did do some damage.
Check out this video of the upcoming Mass Effect 2:
Most games do have some sort content where what can be considered as offensive language is necessary to make a point or to create an atmosphere. Realistically I’m going to swear if a grenade lands near me, or a member of my squad is shot down. Language is just as important to a story in a game as it is in a book. An image of blood and gore is just as important visually in game as it is mentally, in a book.
For some reason creating a character where gratuitous sexual content and offensive language is somehow different, for me. It has a feel of attempting a shock factor for the purpose of marketing as opposed to the benefit of a story line. To me a character is deeper and more interesting if they are less confrontational and gratuitous. But to be honest, that just may be my personal taste.
All game developers have their own agenda and really some of the content is really only there for one purpose; profit. You'd hope though that the ‘Tarantino’s’ of the gaming world have the gaming industry’s best interests as a whole at its heart. Otherwise, me and you are going to be worse off for it.
What do you guys think. Do we defend gratuitous content, or do we demand a higher standard?.
