Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam

BFBC2V

If you're like me and have a weird - unnatural, even - obsession with the Battlefield series should know of the existence of the latest addon to the series; Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam. BFBC2: Vietnam, funnily enough, puts you in the shit on the killing fields of Vietnam circa 1960's in some of the most significant and famous battles of that war. Most will have heard of Hamburger Hill, and if you haven't, slap yourself for being so ignorant, then rent the movie. Being not so quietly excited for this stuff began, for me, with Battlefield 1943. The things they achieved with a 500meg download is something that stands apart to this day from anything else. Early on I heard of DICE licencing CCR's Fortunate Son song and from then I dreamed of riding Huey's into battle with some Apocalypse Now-esque fan fare Wagner thumping out underneath raining hell on the enemy. Or the other way, waiting in my make-shift rice paddy trench anticipating unleashing digital 7.62mm rounds from a Chinese RPD into these old school birds of prey filling up the horizon.

Unfortunately there's only one map where this dream even remotely comes true and it's one chopper - second one on the map after capture - that lasts about 30 seconds in the air if you're lucky, and/or, are good. Sure the music is fantastic and you really can't help going "HELL YEAH" when it cranks up, but after a few days of playing BC2:V you, well me, anyway, are starting to appreciate there's something missing from the game. The best map by far, for me, is Phu Bai and I keep going back to that map on start up. It took me awhile to understand why, then I realized, it's the only map - not including the achievement release map that hasn't been unlocked on Xbox at time of writing - that stays true to the Battlefield franchise and all that you expect. Bucket loads of vehicles clashing at strategic points blasting egos outta the way. Really all the maps excluding that one are Mano-a-mano with the occasional patrol boat parked out in the river systems strafing the hills. These boats are fun, but expect to die super-fast if you come up against players that even have half a sense to snipe your big stupid head from in between the twin fifties.

There's not a lot to say about this game that you couldn't pick up yourself in an hour so I won't spoil the surprise. All the game types are back and are best played in a squad with people you know. Sure, you can lone-wolf it, but start making calls even if no one else is and you'll find find yourself in a squad that communicates eventually. These games are most fun. Play for the team or GTFO, is how I play. Snipers rule, unfortunately, although they are easy to spot - in 1080p anyway - which frustrate most of the maps - there's five - with Phu Bai being the stand out. The flame thrower is hilarious and there's some spectacular modelling with the guns and scenery. The sound is again outstanding and the game play forces clashes. For the DICE collector, you're gonna get it to add to the collection of Battlefield greatness that stands this series apart from ANYTHING else out there and there's nothing I can say that will stop you, and so it shouldn't. For the new guy to the series, maybe invest in Bad Company 2's Map Pack 7 to get the most out of the game. Harvest Day has been revamped from BC1 and is FKN fantastic, and Heavy Metal is just spectacular.

Overall, get it, it's great, but lacking in Battlefield-esque trueness for the most part.

3-stars

Only because this game can only be compared to others in the series as nothing else compares. Destruction 2.0 FTW.
